Costa, Starbucks and Caffè Nerohave pledged to take action following a BBC Watchdog investigation found that their ice contained bacteria from faeces.An undercover investigation from the BBC revealed that iced water obtained from the coffee chain trio contained faecal coliform bacteria.BBC Watchdog found seven out of 10 samples of Costa ice were found to be contaminated with bacteria found in faeces, while both Starbucks and Caffè Nerohad three out of 10 samples test positive for faecal coliform.Costa told British Baker that they have taken immediate action to update its ice handling procedures.“We were disappointed with the findings, especially as these stores are all rated Very Good with the top Hygiene Rating of Five,” said Costa in a statement. “It is extremely important to us that all our stores operate to high standards of hygiene at all times and we take it very seriously when any store fails to meet these standards.”“We adopt industry standard cleaning processes across all our stores, in line with the Food Standard Agency’s advice.”Meanwhile Starbucks said that it wanted to reassure customers that it takes hygiene and cleanliness extremely seriously and will give updated training of ice handling to members of staff.Caffè Nerotold British Baker that a thorough investigation was now underway and the appropriate action would be taken.Hoshizaki, who are the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial ice making equipment, told British Baker that poorly made, inappropriately stored or incorrectly handled ice could become a source of food poisoning.“The most common form of ice contamination occurs after the ice has been manufactured,” said Lena Palmer, marketing for Hoshizaki. “Dirty, unsanitised ice scoops or rarely cleaned ice buckets leave much to be desired. Few of us would opt to eat food that has been through a poor handling process, and the same is relevant for ice.”“The only potential sources of danger at the ice manufacturing stage are water and air. It is therefore imperative to protect against the harmful effects of both. The placement of an ice maker is vital – too often they are slotted into any available space, such as damp cellars or unventilated areas, where air quality is at its poorest and aero bacteria are most profound.”The ice equipment manufacturer revealed that the most important factor to prevent bacteria growth for baristas is regular machine maintenance and personal hygiene.
May 23, 2007 (CIDRAP News) – Indonesia announced today that a 5-year-old girl died of H5N1 avian influenza, while a hospital official in Vietnam reported that a 30-year-old man is being treated for the disease, apparently marking the country’s first human case in a year and a half.Joko Suyono of the Indonesian health ministry’s avian flu center said the young girl died on May 17, according to a Xinhua news report today. She was taken to a doctor on May 8 and was hospitalized May 15 in Solo, Central Java, the report said.The girl reportedly had contact with infected birds, health ministry official Muhammad Nadhirin told the Associated Press (AP) today. About 20 birds had recently died near her home, the AP report said.If her case is confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO), she will be listed as Indonesia’s 97th case-patient and 77th fatality. Indonesia leads the world in the number of human H5N1 cases and deaths.The WHO announced May 16 that it would accept H5N1 test results from Indonesia’s newly accredited national laboratory. Before that, the agency had refused to confirm any cases reported by Indonesia since late January, because the country had stopped sending viruses to WHO collaborating labs in December.Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man from Vietnam’s northern province of Vinh Phuc, about 35 miles from Hanoi, tested positive for H5N1 infection at a Hanoi hospital, where he continues to be treated, the AP reported today. Tran Quy, director of Bach Mai hospital, told the AP the man tested positive 3 days ago.Samples from the patient will be shipped to a WHO lab for analysis, said Hans Troedsson, a WHO official in Vietnam, according to a Canadian Press (CP) report today. Vietnam’s hasn’t had a human H5N1 case since November 2005, but Troedsson said the case is “not really a surprise,” given the known risk of H5N1 transmission from birds to humans.Quy told the AP, “The man is in a critical condition. He has a high fever, difficulty breathing, coughing, and the x-ray of his lung was completely white. All of these are typical bird flu symptoms.”The man was hospitalized last week; relatives reported he fell ill after helping prepare chickens for a wedding reception.If his infection is confirmed, it will be the country’s 94th case. With 93 confirmed cases and 42 deaths, Vietnam has the world’s second highest H5N1 toll.Vietnam had a lull in human cases and poultry outbreaks through most of 2006, during which the country was praised for its H5N1 virus control efforts. The virus resurfaced among ducks in several central Mekong Delta and central provinces in December and January. In early May the country began reporting a new rash of poultry outbreaks throughout the country.

Walwyn has stressed that his door remains open to anyone wishing to come in and discuss ways of leaving behind the life of a gang member.Walwyn disclosed that he has had positive interactions with some individuals and has been able to effect behavioural change in certain cases.“By dialoguing with these young men, we are understanding where they are coming from, but they also know where we are coming from, and I can truly say up to this point, [since] my dialogue with these young men … I have not had one shooting. I’ve not had one stabbing, nothing from this particular group,” he stressed.Walwyn has developed a number of plans and networked with local and regional agencies to find alternative opportunities for the young men to be engaged productively. One such activity provided entrepreneurial training for current and ex-gang members, as well as several prison inmates. The skills were imparted during a workshop held in collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat in mid-November. The participants expressed pleasure with the activity and touted the access to a number of support structures.Other initiatives will come on stream in 2012. One targeted programme is modeled after an agriculture-based initiative in Jamaica, which has been very successful as an outreach tool.“All we’re doing is trying to make this place safer,” Walwyn stressed, while expressing an interest to meet with other gang members.
