UK government slammed for delaying FOBT curbs

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Email Address UK government slammed for delaying FOBT curbs Topics: Legal & compliance Regions: UK & Ireland The opposition Labour Party has accused the UK government of being “fundamentally weak” over delaying curbs on fixed-odds betting terminals to 2020 The opposition Labour Party has accused the UK government of being “fundamentally weak” after it emerged that the introduction of curbs on controversial fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) would be delayed until 2020.The government announced earlier this year that the maximum stake on the machines would be slashed from £100 to £2.The changes were unlikely to be implemented until 2019 due to the need for parliamentary approval for the introduction of a new statutory instrument. However, despite reports that the changes would take bookmakers a maximum of eight weeks to implement, a later transition date has been agreed by the Treasury, according to The Times.“Capitulating to a two-year delay is a pathetic move from a fundamentally weak government,” Labour’s Deputy Leader, Tom Watson, told the Guardian newspaper.“Those who praised the government when the announcement was made will feel badly let down. They are already rolling back on their promises and allowing these machines to ruin more lives.”It now appears to be inevitable that a higher tax on online gaming will be introduced before the curbs on FOBTs.“Unbelievably, Treasury thinks it takes two years for the bookmakers to run a software update on their server-based FOBTs to remove games they should never have been allowed in the first place,” a spokesperson for the Campaign for Fairer Gambling said.“Somehow Treasury has given the bookies a longer transition period than it’ll take the government to negotiate Brexit. The delay will mean hundreds of thousands more people experiencing harm before the gambling addiction gateway of high speed, high stakes roulette is removed.”Related article: Shares plunge as Chancellor accepts FOBT limit Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Tags: OTB and Betting Shops Legal & compliance 15th June 2018 | By contenteditorlast_img read more

Landmark Raiders deal for Caesars

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Caesars Entertainment has bolstered its rapidly-expanding US sports partnership portfolio by being unveiled as the first founding partner of the Las Vegas Stadium, the future home of the Las Vegas Raiders NFL American football franchise, in a mammoth 15-year deal. The 65,000-seat stadium is expected to bring 520,000 people to home games each year when it opens for the 2020 NFL season. The Raiders franchise will relocate to Nevada from its long-term home of Oakland in California.Caesars said that it would use the partnership to offer special customer experiences, including access to a Caesars-branded owners’ suite at the stadium’s 50-yard line. Other experiences include VIP dinners on the field, training facility events, fantasy camp participation, stadium tours and tickets to home games and other events at the stadium. There will also be a branded stadium entrance and drop-off one, as well as branding placements on digital, media and print platforms. In recent days, Caesars has announced partnerships with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, the Philadelphia 76ers NBA basketball franchise and the New Jersey Devils NHL ice hockey team. However, the partnership with the Las Vegas Stadium is arguably the most significant to date. The NFL, despite relaxing its rules that previously barred teams from entering into partnerships with gambling companies, currently do not allow partnerships with sportsbooks.“Sports have long been a core part of the Caesars’ experience,” said Chris Holdren, Caesars’ chief marketing officer.“With this deep partnership, Caesars will become an essential part of the game time ritual for Raiders fans everywhere.”The Raiders did not immediately respond to a request by iGamingBusiness.com to clarify whether the future possibility of offering sports betting at the venue had been included in the contract with Caesars.Although the original stadium lease included language that prohibited “gaming and gambling, the maintaining or operating of a gambling establishment and/or sports wagering or any wagering on racing or other non-sports events”, it did not mention mobile betting.Last month, MGM’s online gaming chief Scott Butera said that US sports venues should consider introducing in-venue betting services for fans in order to capitalise on the expanding, regulated market.Image credit: Caesars Entertainment / Raiders Regions: US Nevada Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Email Address 1st November 2018 | By contenteditorcenter_img Casino & games Topics: Casino & games Marketing & affiliates Landmark Raiders deal for Caesars Casino operator is the first founding partner of new Vegas stadium in 15-year deallast_img read more

NetEnt to cut head office jobs in efficiency drive

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Topics: People People NetEnt is cutting up to 55 jobs at its Stockholm headquarters as it looks to free up resources to ramp up new game development. The casino games suplier said it is seeking to reduce staff numbers immediately at its Swedish hub, with jobs affected mainly in corporate support functions. The redundancies are likely to lead to a one-off cost of around SEK20m for the fourth quarter of the year.“By decentralizing our operations we take another step towards a new NetEnt, where customers and players are in focus,” the supplier’s chief executive Therese Hillman explained. “The new organization will have clearer responsibilities and more emphasis on value-creating initiatives.” In particular the supplier will look to allocate more resources to game production, with Hillman noting that the company would look to release up to 35 games in 2019. The announcement comes two months after Hillman revealed that the business was looking to cut costs in a bid to streamline operations and speed up development cycles. NetEnt’s offices in Sweden employed 415 people on average last year, with the majority in Stockholm. The company had a headcount of 1,002 across its offices in six countries. In its most recent quarterly filing, NetEnt said operating expenses amounted to SEK 277.2m, a year-on-year increase of 11% it explained was primarily due to more staff in Live Casino and higher depreciation. Operating profit of SEK 172m was up 11% on Q3 2017.Meanwhile, NetEnt also noted that it would incur an additional SEK5m in costs relating to the write-down of intangible assets regarding a virtual reality development project – on the same day it announced the launch of VR casino Ninja Casino Live with the no-registration operator.“Our ground-breaking exclusive virtual casinos have breathed new life into the live casino experience,” NetEnt chief product officer Henrik Fagerlund commented. “They take the offering to a new level and allow operators to maximize results by having significant input into the design and build of the product.”Dirk Camilleri, head of casino at Ninja Casino parent company Global Gaming, added that inclusion of a dedicated Swedish-speaking dealer was particularly important ahead of that market’s re-regulation next month.“Ninja Casino Live will enable us to offer a completely new, fully immersive casino experience on mobile,” Camilleri said.“We are thrilled to be the first operator to launch a dedicated Swedish blackjack table on a NetEnt exclusive casino and are very pleased with the level of customisation that will increase engagement, with Ninja Casino Live fitting perfectly into our Ninja Casino offering.” Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Email Address NetEnt to cut head office jobs in efficiency drive 12th December 2018 | By contenteditor Regions: Europe Nordics Sweden Tags: Online Gambling More than 50 jobs are at risk at content developer’s Stockholm headquarters as it reallocates resources to game developmentlast_img read more

Gambling Commission confirms credit card ban from April

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Gambling Commission confirms credit card ban from April Email Address Topics: Casino & games Finance Legal & compliance Lottery Sports betting Bingo Tags: Online Gambling OTB and Betting Shops The GB Gambling Commission has announced that it will introduce a ban on the use of credit cards for all forms of online and land-based gambling from 14 April. The decision comes after the Commission’s review of online gambling and the Government’s Review of Gaming Machines and Social Responsibility Measures, while a public consultation on the issue ran from August to November 2019.The ban will apply to all online and offline gambling products, with the exception of non-remote lotteries, including products such as physical National Lottery tickets and scratchcards purchased in-person at approved retail outlets.According to the regulator, the new ban will help provide a significant layer of additional protection to vulnerable people in Britain.“Credit card gambling can lead to significant financial harm; the ban that we have announced today should minimise the risks of harm to consumers from gambling with money they do not have,” GC chief executive Neil McArthur said.“We know that there are examples of consumers who have accumulated tens of thousands of pounds of debt through gambling because of credit card availability. There is also evidence that the fees charged by credit cards can exacerbate the situation because the consumer can try to chase losses to a greater extent.”McArthur said while he understood some consumers used credit cards because they were convenient, the risk of harm to other players was too high to allow the use of this payment to continue in gambling.“We realise that this change will inconvenience those consumers who use credit cards responsibly but we are satisfied that reducing the risk of harm to other consumers means that action must be taken,” McArthur said. “But we will evaluate the ban and watch closely for any unintended circumstances for consumers.“The ban is part of our ongoing work to reduce gambling harm. We also need to continue the work we have been doing with gambling operators and the finance industry to ensure consumers only gamble with money they can afford to spend.”Culture Minister Helen Whately also praised the move: “Whilst millions gamble responsibly, I have also met people whose lives have been turned upside down by gambling addiction. There is clear evidence of harm from consumers betting with money they do not have, so it is absolutely right that we act decisively to protect them.”Whately also confirmed the government will carry out a review of the Gambling Act in order to “ensure it is fit for the digital age”, as promised in the ruling Conservative Party’s election manifesto. Plans are also in place to launch a new nationwide addiction strategy in 2020 as part of an ongoing effort to tackle problem gambling in the UK.“We will not hesitate to take any further action necessary to protect people from gambling harm,” Whately said. The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), the trade association for the UK gambling industry, declared its support for the new ban, and immediately pledged that its members would go one step further.“We will implement a ban on credit cards and indeed our members will go further to study and improve the early identification of those at risk,” BGC chair Brigid Simmonds said. “The use of credit cards were previously used as a potential marker of harm which might lead to further intervention with customers.”Marc Etches, chief executive of problem gambling funding body GambleAware, also hailed the credit card ban, noting that it was essential that every effort was made to protect those experiencing gambling harm.“Gambling is a public health issue and mobile technology gives people access to gambling anytime, anywhere,” he explained. “Anyone who chooses to gamble should be able to do so in a safe environment, where the risks and available support options are made crystal clear.”Meanwhile, the GC has also announced changes to its licence conditions whereby all online gambling operators will be required to participate in the GamStop online self-exclusion scheme and offer customers the service from 31 March. The GB Gambling Commission has announced that it will introduce a ban on the use of credit cards for all forms of online and land-based gambling from 14 April. 14th January 2020 | By contenteditor Regions: UK & Ireland Bingo Subscribe to the iGaming newsletterlast_img read more

Premier League targets 17 June restart AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwittercenter_img Sports betting Regions: UK & Ireland English Premier League clubs have provisionally agreed to resume play from 17 June, 100 days since the competition was halted due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.Clubs met today (28 May) to discuss the details of the proposed return to action, before confirming that the season will resume provided all safety requirements can be put in place by that date. “Today we have provisionally agreed to resume the Premier League on Wednesday 17 June,” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said. “But this date cannot be confirmed until we have met all the safety requirements needed, as the health and welfare of all participants and supporters is our priority. The first two matches back will see Aston Villa take on Sheffield United, while Manchester City plays Arsenal, on 17 June. After these games have taken place, each club in the division will have played 29 times, and a full fixture list will return over 19-21 June. There are a total of 92 games of the 2019-20 campaign still to play, with clubs reportedly keen to conclude the season by early August. The competition has been suspended since mid-March.“Sadly, matches will have to take place without fans in stadiums, so we are pleased to have come up with a positive solution for supporters to be able to watch all the remaining 92 matches,” Masters added. This will see all of the remaining matches broadcast live via the league’s existing broadcast partners, Sky Sports, BT Sport, BBC Sport and Amazon Prime. Sky is to broadcast 64 of these games, of which 25 will be free-to-air, with four to be broadcast on the BBC – the first time the corporation will have shown full Premier League matches. BT has not said how many games it will show – or how many, if any, will be free-to-air – while Amazon is yet to confirm if its games will only be available to Prime subscribers.“The Premier League and our clubs are proud to have incredibly passionate and loyal supporters,” Masters continued. “It is important to ensure as many people as possible can watch the matches at home.“We will continue to work step-by-step and in consultation with all our stakeholders as we move towards resuming the 2019/20 season.”The planned kick-off times in the UK for live matches will also differ from the traditional times, in order to ensure all can be broadcast.Yesterday (27 May), clubs unanimously voted to resume contact training, with the move also approved by players, managers, the Professional Footballers’ Association, League Managers Association and the UK government.Last week, stakeholders also approved a return to small-group training, with players having already been permitted to begin training alone at club facilities.Premier League players and staff will continue to be tested for Covid-19 at least twice a week, with testing capacity also being increased following the return to contact training. Anyone who tests positive must self-isolate for a minimum of seven days.Liverpool currently sit top of the league, 25 points ahead of Manchester City, and had been on course to win the Premier League for the first time.Football governing bodies in Italy and Spain also announced their intentions to complete the 2019-20 season, while Germany’s Bundesliga resumed matches behind closed doors earlier this month.
