The Case For LeBron James MVP

But volume isn’t everything. Westbrook and Harden are having historic offensive seasons, but James has them beat on efficiency (while being only a hair behind in volume). James’s true shooting percentage is higher than both Harden’s and Westbrook’s, and LeBron generates more points per potential assist than the two.3An NBA player-tracking statistic that covers all passes that lead to a shooting foul, generate an assist or would generate an assist if the shot were made. Through April 10Source: NBA LeBron James26.422.749.1 James Harden29.127.256.3 Through April 10Source: NBA And then there’s the other side of the ball, where only Leonard rivals James. Harden’s defense generally falls on the wrong side of average, often to a comical degree. Westbrook racks up his share of rebounds and steals, but the consensus is that he’s nowhere near elite. And Curry is the soft spot in the Warriors’ defense despite having made great strides. That leaves LeBron and Leonard — and while Kawhi has won the last two defensive player of the year awards, ESPN’s Real Plus-Minus estimates that LeBron’s defensive impact has been nearly twice as great this season.4Leonard’s wonky defensive metrics have been the subject of much discussion this year, and should likely be taken with a grain of salt because Kawhi may be suffering from the random noise of unexpectedly hot opponent shooting from the free throw line and on 3-pointers.So there’s a statistical case for LeBron as MVP — both offensively and defensively. But the MVP award isn’t an objective one — there’s no agreed-upon definition of value. And that means voters’ decisions often come down to the narratives that wrap around the numbers. The 1961-62 MVP award, for example, didn’t go to Oscar Robertson and his season-long triple-double, nor did it go to Wilt Chamberlain and his 50.4 points and 25.7 rebounds per game. The winner was Bill Russell — who had lesser, albeit still eye-popping, numbers — because leading the Boston Celtics to the league’s best record and top defense proved more compelling. And it’s in this category of narrative that LeBron suffers the most by comparison. His Cavaliers have slid in the second half of the season, dragged down by atrocious defensive performances. He isn’t breaking any records. At 32 years old and with 14 seasons and an absurd numbers of minutes behind him, LeBron is “only” as good as he’s ever been. But that might make him the best two-way player in the NBA this season. His story just happens to be a rerun in syndication, an episode we’ve seen a half-dozen times before. So, forget the numbers. The MVP argument for LeBron goes something like this: Measure the man against himself. If you watched LeBron carry the Cavaliers back from the brink in last year’s NBA Finals, you know he’s the best player in the NBA, full stop. Nothing he’s done, or not done, this season has changed that basic fact. Look past the glitter of round numbers and records broken. LeBron James is your MVP. Stephen Curry1.3662.5% PLAYERPOINTS PER POTENTIAL ASSISTTRUE SHOOTING PERCENTAGE Kawhi Leonard25.78.934.6 PER GAME Greatness is often easier to recognize when it looks like nothing we’ve seen before. To a large degree, this is the MVP case for Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Kawhi Leonard: The first shoulders offensive responsibility to a previously unimagined degree, piling up counting stats at a historic pace. The second leans into the hyper-efficient idiosyncrasies of his game and leads one of the most extreme and extremely efficient offenses we’ve ever seen. The third has blossomed from a defensive stopper into a two-way superstar, one of the most efficient volume scorers in the league. Each is an MVP candidate not only because he played phenomenal basketball this season but also because he is so unlike recent MVP winners. And then there is LeBron James.Statistically speaking, LeBron has been at least as productive as the rest of that group, among the other elites in any metric chosen. But he’s been so good for so long that an incredible season doesn’t stand out. For LeBron, the incredible has become mundane. This is the third entry in our series making the case for five NBA MVP candidates. We’ve also made the case for James Harden and the case for Kawhi Leonard. Still to come: Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook. Also, check out our NBA predictions.Much of the MVP conversation, for better or worse, is likely to center on volume. That’s what happens when one candidate is averaging a triple-double and another threatened to lead the league in both scoring and assists. James’s averages — 26.4 points, 8.7 assists and 8.6 rebounds per game1All stats in this piece are current through April 10. — are not as flashy as Westbrook’s or Harden’s, but he’ll join them, Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan as the only players to average 26, 8 and 8 across a full season. So James isn’t that far behind Westbrook and Harden in how much offense he creates — and he has a sizable advantage on Curry and Leonard. We can see this by adding up the points each player scored and those he created for teammates with assists2Courtesy of the NBA’s player tracking statistics.: PLAYERPOINTS SCOREDPOINTS CREATED BY ASSISTTOTAL POINTS CREATED LeBron James1.3661.9 Russell Westbrook31.923.855.7 Kawhi Leonard1.2961.2 James Harden1.2761.2 Russell Westbrook1.2155.5 LeBron is more efficient than Westbrook or Harden Stephen Curry25.415.540.9 LeBron generates more offensive volume than Curry or Leonard read more

9 Executives On What Would Happen If Their Brands Vanished

first_img We live in a world of hyper competition among traditional players, new digital players and advertisers communicating directly with our audiences. With social media and “TV Everywhere,” audiences are massively distracted and have more choice than ever. If your brand went away, why would anyone care? What makes you unique and unduplicated? Today’s media mechanisms have made it easy for anyone to communicate a message to the masses. From the reader’s perspective those messages may or may not have credibility and value, depending on the source. We find that our readers continually turn to our trusted brand (both in print and digital editions) to find valuable solutions, ideas, and inspiration. If we pulled the FDMC brand out of the wood products manufacturing industry, there would be an enormous hole to fill in the hearts and minds of our loyal readership. Tim Fixmer CEO CCI Media Here’s a disparate collection of frank and illuminating responses. Click through to see the commentary. What makes our brand essential in the market is the surgical functions performed by our content team. This is true of any good b2b brand in this day and age, though it is applies to consumer products I am a reader of as well. Great content teams clearly understand their purpose and they perform their functions well. Now, more so than ever before, readers in any given industry segment need the content team to understand the key issues facing the readership. Once those issues are clearly understood (and in many cases they can change rapidly due to changing technologies) it is the content team’s responsibility to venture forth, seeking answers to questions and solutions to problems that lie at the core of the issues. As the question implies, there is no shortage of information out there, to be sure. Some of it is right on the money, some slightly off, some simple marketing hype, and some just plain dead wrong opinion. Our job is to interpret the information we uncover, fact check for validation, prioritize it, and present it in a meaningful way so that the reader can quickly grasp concepts, methods, and technologies that impact their day to day operations, solve their problems and become more effective businesspeople.center_img Prev1 of 9NextUse your ← → (arrow) keys to browse We at Folio: have been asking periodic questions of c-suite executives in magazine media. first_imgVijay Devarakonda with his brother Anand DevarakondaTwitterActor Anand Devarakonda, who is making his acting debut with Dorasani (Dorasaani), has revealed that his brother Vijay Devarakonda is very tensed about his career even after watching the film.Dorasani is slated for its theatrical release on July 12. Its promos have grabbed many eyeballs and generated a lot of curiosity about the film. Anand Devarakonda, who has pinned a lot of hopes on the movie, is currently busy promoting the flick, which is expected to get him the big break of his career.”Dorasani is a periodic love story set in the rural areas of Telangana. The film is a very realistic approach towards filmmaking and none of the roles are forced. The happenings are real and we have shot the film is some real locations to get the authentic vibe. The hard-hitting proceedings will surely shock the audience,” Anand Devarakonda told 123Telugu.What has raised more curiosity about Dorasani is that Anand Devarakonda is the brother of Vijay Devarakonda, who is the most successful actor among the younger generation of stars. Until its pre-release event, the Geetha Govindam star did not talk about Anand’s career and Dorasani. When asked about his brother’s reaction, Anand told, “Vijay was super tensed before watching the film. He had no hopes on the project and watched it with an open mind. Once he saw me perform, he was very happy. There is no denying the fact that he is even more tensed now as the film is ready for a release.”However, Anand Devarakonda has quit his engineering job at a reputed company like Deloitte in the US to pursue a career in acting. His brother Vijay Devarakonda was very upset with his decision and he stopped talking to Anand. The actor himself revealed it at the pre-release event of Dorasani, where he was a chief guest.Addressing the event of Dorasani, Vijay Devarakonda said, “I didn’t like Anand quitting his job at Deloitte in the USA. I told him that acting is not an easy job. Since that day, I didn’t inquire about how Dorasaani was progressing. I watched the film before coming to the event and I must say, the entire team has made me proud.”last_img read more

SC accepts lower court judges disciplinary rules

first_imgSupreme CourtThe Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday accepted the gazette notification on the disciplinary rules for lower court judges, reports UNB.A five-member Appellate Division bench, led by acting chief justice Abdul Wahhab Miah, granted the disciplinary rules citing that the government issued the gazette giving primacy to the opinions of the apex court at every stage. Some media outlets are making unnecessary comments on gazette notification without reading it, the apex court observed.Earlier, attorney general Mahbubey Alam read out the gazette on judges’ disciplinary rules before the Appellate Division bench. On 11 December last, the government issued the gazette notification.Later, on 13 December, the SC fixed 3 January (today) for an order on the notification. The lower judiciary was officially separated in November 2007 but the disciplinary rules for lower court judges had not been formulated. On 2 December 1999, the Supreme Court in the Masdar Hossain case issued a seven-point directive, including formulating separate disciplinary rules, for the lower court judges. The law ministry on 7 May 2015 sent a draft of the rules to the Supreme Court which was similar to the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1985.last_img read more

Travel permit restrictions to prevent return of militants

first_img*This report, originally appeared in Prothom Alo print editon, has been rewritten here in English by Nusrat Nowrin. Militant illustrationIn order to prevent the return of Bangladeshi militants who joined wars in Syria and Iraq, the home ministry has issued directives to Bangladesh embassies abroad not to issue travel permits without the ministry’s approval. This decision was reportedly taken at a recent meeting between the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the top officials of home ministry. The home ministry’s immigration department under the security services division sent a letter to the foreign ministry on 16 May, stating that security threats had increased recently due to militant activities in the international arena. Granting travel permits without proper verification could pose as a threat to the country’s security, the letter said.Militants might conceal their identity and enter the country, the letter added, asking the foreign ministry to issue directives in this regard to Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions abroad.Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the airports have also been alerted about militants entering the country. The airports have been provided details of militants with Bangladeshi passports, he added.”The US has said certain militants who were Bangladeshi-origin US citizens, were also trying to enter Bangladesh. The agencies in Bangladesh do not have much information about the matter. As they did not have passports, they might try to get travel permits from the embassies and enter Bangladesh. That is why it has been decided to verify everyone’s identity before they enter the ocuntry. Anyone with a travel permit can return to the country as soon as the home ministry gives its approval,” the minister said. While asked whether this decision may hamper the return of immigrant Bangladeshi workers who had lost their passports for various reasons, Asaduzzaman said, “We will speedily send them approval by e-mail or fax.”According to sources in the law enforcement, many have gone to Syria and Iraq from Bangladesh, influenced by Islamic State (ISIS) ideology. The authorities do not have information on the exact numbers of these militants, whether they are dead or alive, or their whereabouts. The law enforcement sources referred to a foreign terrorist fighters’ list prepared by a certain western country, which said over 40 Bangladeshis went to Syria from Bangladesh in 2014-15. Many of them were killed and several landed in prisons in Syria and Iraq after being detained. Many Bangladeshi-origin citizens from other countries also went to Syria.Several other countries have already taken cautionary steps against militants of their respective countries from returning after the fall of ISIS in Syria.Officers of Dhaka Metropolitan Police CTTC (Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime) unit stressed the need to verify the identities of the people coming from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, and Lebanon as they may be militants returning from these countries.According to several sources, Mutaz Abdul Majid, a youth born and brought up in Saudi Arabia, came to Bangladesh from Turkey last February. He was taken into custody at the airport and later shown arrested.Mutaz had taken his passport from the Bangladesh embassy in Saudi Arabia and went to Turkey using the passport in 2016. Later, the Turkish police detained him and sent him to Bangladesh. However, the law enforcement here could not verify as yet whether Mutaz fought in Syria on any militant front.Militants have been blacklisted in many countries, and so will try to enter any country with a travel pass, CTTC chief Monirul Islam said.Fast travel passes are often sought to send back illegal workers. Militants may try to use such travels passes to return to the country and so the home ministry has issued the alert in this regard.last_img read more
