May 2, 2018 Updated: 5:03 PM SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — According to a study conducted by GasBuddy, “Gasoline prices are at their highest levels since 2014 and will continue to rise through Memorial Day.”Many metro areas are already seeing prices well over $3 a gallon, many places in San Diego County are even seeing prices higher than $4 a gallon. The new study by GasBuddy has found the best and worst days of the weeks to buy gas to maximize savings at the pump and avoid the lines during the busy summer travel season. “The case of the Mondays” is not a thing when it comes to pumping gas. The study states, “Monday offers the lowest average gas price in 21 states, making it the best day to fill-up. Friday has the most expensive average and is the worst day to buy gas in 19 states.“Though there is variation in daily gas prices across different states, the consensus is that the earlier motorists fill-up during the week, the better,” says Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Following Monday, Sunday is the cheapest day to fill-up. Conversely, Thursday follows Friday as the most expensive day to fill-up.”Furthermore, the study found that “gas stations across the country are least busy on Sundays, followed by Mondays. And Friday is the busiest day to fill-up your tank. India’s largest mortgage lender, HDFC, has reduced its lending rate on housing loans by 25 basis points to 9.65%.The new rate, which is applicable to both existing and new customers, will be effective from Tuesday. Women borrowers are eligible for an additional 5bps cut in home loan rates, HDFC said.Following the cut, the effective home loan rate for female customers now stands at 9.60%.HDFC’s rate cut move comes in the wake of last week’s 50bps reduction in repo rate by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Soon after the central bank’s rate cut decision, many banks like the State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of India and Andhra Bank announced a reduction in their base rate. While the country’s largest lender, SBI, slashed its lending rate by 40bps, Andhra Bank reduced its base rate by 25bps. Private sectors banks like Axis Bank and ICICI Bank have reduced their benchmark lending rate by 35bps each. With the latest cut, the RBI has slashed the repo rate by 125bps to 6.75% so far this year. The central bank, however, kept the cash reserve ratio (CRR) unchanged at 4%.However, transmission of RBI rate cuts by banks to end users did not keep pace, as lenders remained sceptical about credit uptake even after large base rate cuts.Prior to RBI’s September meeting, the banks had cut the base rate by just 30 bps on an average compared to 75bps cut in the central bank’s repo rate, Business Standard reported.Bank credit growth, a major indicator of economic growth, slowed to a two-decade low in the fiscal year ending March 2015. In 2014-15, credit growth was up 9.52%, down from an increase of 13.83% in 2013-14.
Residents gather outside their apartment blocks in Jakarta on early 16 December 2017, following a strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale. AFPAt least two people have been killed following a strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake on Indonesia’s main island of Java, an official said Saturday. The quake struck at a depth of 91 kilometres (56 miles) just outside the coastal town of Cipatujah on Java island late Friday, the US Geological Survey said. The tremor was felt across the island including in the capital Jakarta, some 300 kilometres (190 miles) from the epicentre.A 62-year-old man in Ciamis and an 80-year-old woman in Pekalongan city were killed when the buildings they were in collapsed, national disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.“Several hospitals in several areas have also been damaged and patients had to be evacuated,” Nugroho said.A hospital in Banyumas suffered damaged ceilings, cracked walls and leaks to oxygen pipelines, forcing about 70 patients to be moved to temporary shelters. At least a hundred houses were damaged across West Java and Central Java provinces, the national disaster mitigation agency said. The agency was still evaluating the impact of the disaster and urged people to be cautious and stay alert.Jakarta resident Web Warouw, 50, was on the 18th floor of a building in the capital when the quake struck just before midnight local time (1700 GMT).“Suddenly, we felt dizzy… We then realised it was a quake and immediately ran downstairs,” Warouw told AFP.Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide. Some 170,000 lives were lost when a 9.1-magnitude quake and tsunami struck Aceh in December 2004, which also hit coastal areas as far away as Somalia. An earthquake struck the country’s western Aceh province again in December 2016, killing more than 100 people, injuring many more and leaving tens of thousands homeless.
